Frequently Asked Questions
How Trail Therapy Works

What is Trail Therapy?
Trail Therapy, also known as Walk-and-Talk Therapy or Outdoor Counseling, brings the therapeutic process into a natural setting. Rather than sitting in a traditional office, you and your therapist meet outdoors—usually on a scenic, low-impact trail—and engage in conversation while walking. The movement and natural surroundings often help clients feel more at ease, grounded, and open.

How is it different from regular therapy?
The biggest difference is the setting: nature becomes part of the experience. Being outdoors reduces the formality of traditional therapy and can lead to a more relaxed, authentic dialogue. Movement and fresh air can also boost mood, increase clarity, and reduce stress. Many clients find it easier to open up while walking side-by-side, rather than sitting face-to-face.

Do I need to be athletic or “outdoorsy”?
Not at all. Trail Sessions are designed to be accessible for all fitness levels. We’ll choose gentle, well-maintained trails based on your comfort and mobility. This is about emotional movement—not physical performance.

What happens if it rains or the weather’s bad?
If the conditions are unsafe, we will reschedule or move our session indoors. Trail Sessions during rainy weather bring their own unique benefits. Umbrellas and rain jackets are welcome.

Is this type of therapy effective?
Yes. While Trail Therapy may feel less formal, the therapeutic process is still grounded in evidence-based practices. Research shows that spending time in nature can reduce anxiety, improve mood, and support overall mental well-being. When combined with the guidance of a skilled therapist, the effects can be deeply impactful.

Is this covered by insurance?
Trail Sessions are billed the same way as traditional therapy sessions. If you’re using insurance or a superbill, it typically applies. We’re happy to help you figure out what’s covered and walk you through the process.
